- Bear’s Shadow: Students will be introduced to Bear and make observations that will help them determine the effect of sunlight on Earth’s surface. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: K-PS3-1)
- Engineering a Fairy Tale: You Can Huff & You Can Puff, But You Can’t Blow My House Down: Using the fairy tale classic, The Three Little Pigs, students design and construct the strongest house that will withstand the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, K-2-ETS1-3)
- Star Lab: Enjoy an age-appropriate program relating to the stories of the constellations as seen from the point of view of one of the ancient culture’s (Roman, Chinese and Native American) Storytellers.
FIRST GRADE:
- Way Up High: Inside the MHDM Star Lab Planetarium, students experience the apparent motions of the sun, moon, and stars and begin to recognize predictable patterns. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 1-ESS1-1)
- Bear’s Shadow: Students will hang out with Bear and make observations to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 1-ESS1-2)
- Engineering a Fairy Tale: Crossing the Hudson River with the 3 Billy Goats Gruff: Based on the fairy tale classic, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, students, working in teams, will help the BGG Family get across the Hudson River.
SECOND GRADE:
- Daring Detectives on The Case: Students team up to crack the case, constructing an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 2-PS1-4)
- Home “Tweet” Home: Building in the Hudson Valley has forced animals of all kinds to move out of their natural environments. It’s up to the rescue veterinarians to design and construct a home that will keep birdie safe from the human world.
THIRD GRADE:
- Collison Course – Wildlife Crossing: Students will delve into the real-world problem of animals vs. humans. Teams comprised of engineers and scientists will work together to design and engineer a structure that will allow animals to safely cross roads, minimizing the contact between humans and wildlife. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 3-LS4-3)
- Delivery on Demand: The MHDM has opened its very own bakery and needs the help of student engineers to develop a unique delivery system. In this wind-powered delivery challenge, students will engineer a device that can transport a sweet treat to Museum patrons. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 3-PS2-2)
- Mission to Space: Exploring the Solar System Design, Build, Test: Missions to space require large teams to design, build, and test spacecraft. Students become part of a team that is preparing to launch a spacecraft into space. Team members design, build and test to see if their space craft is flight ready. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3)
- Star Lab: Enjoy an age-appropriate program relating to the stories of the constellations as seen from the point of view of one of the ancient culture’s (Roman, Chinese and Native American) Storytellers.
FOURTH GRADE:
- Circle of Life: Health is a fundamental human right. Healthcare is easier to access in some locations than in others. Student teams devise a way to deposit lifesaving medicine to a remote location. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 4-PS3-1, 4-PS3-4)
- Exploring Chain Reactions: Your friend’s birthday is coming up. You want to do something that your friend will really remember. What will you do? Exploring concepts around simple machines and energy transfer, students design a memorable birthday chain reaction. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 4-PS4-3)
- Engineering for Earthquakes: As earthquake engineers, students use materials to construct an earthquake-safe structure and test to determine if it is a seismically sound structure that will withstand an earthquake. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 4-ESS3-2)
- Game On!: Students design and build a simple toy with its own propulsion mechanism.
FIFTH GRADE:
- Stomp Rockets: Some rockets carry science tools—not scientists—into space! Students design, build and test rockets and support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 5-PS2-1)
- Starry Nights: Inside the MHDM planetarium, students experience the night sky and make connections that allow them to see patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, as well as the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 5-ESS1-2)
- Search & Rescue – Save the Hiker: Can you build a device that will deliver life-saving treatment to someone in a hazardous situation? (NYSS /Sci21/NGSS: 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3)
- Star Lab: Enjoy an age-appropriate program relating to the stories of the constellations as seen from the point of view of one of the ancient culture’s (Roman, Chinese and Native American) Storytellers.
