Food & Drinks

Food and drinks are not permitted in the Museum galleries. Guests can enjoy food and drinks in our designated Snack Zone, on our patio, or in our outdoor waterfront pavilion.

Museum Store

We are very pleased to offer specialty items not found in big box stores so you can bring the learning home with a discovery kit or special toy. Purchases can be made at the front desk.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are for Museum guests only.  Separate men’s and women’s rooms are available on each floor of the Museum. Every bathroom has a changing table.

Bathrooms are NOT available to the general public.  Outdoor public restrooms are available in Upper Landing Park and the southern end of Waryas Park.

Coat Room

We do not have a coat check, but do have an open closet with hangers at our main entrance. Space is limited for bags. We recommend that you keep bags and valuables secured in your vehicle.

Parking

Off-street parking is available in our private, gated parking lot free of charge to Museum guests.  If you are at the Museum for a visit, you will need to trade in your parking lot entry ticket for a validated exit ticket at the end of your visit.

The general public, if not visiting the Museum, will be charged $5 per hour to park in the Museum’s lot.

Event parking:  Free parking is included for Museum-sponsored events and for private Museum rentals/parties being held at the Museum or the pavilion.  Free parking is not available for non-Museum events (including general waterfront events) without an executed and paid rental contract. Read our parking lot rental guidelines here.

Accessibility

Wheelchair accessibility:  The Museum entrance faces the Hudson River and has both stairs and a handicapped ramp. The Museum offers exhibit galleries on two floors, both of which are accessible by stairs and a new elevator. MHDM has an adult-sized wheelchair available for guests with mobility restrictions. Please call ahead to request the wheelchair for your visit.

Guests with special needs:  Our exhibits are designed to be accessible for children with a wide variety of needs.  Please note that our exhibits are sized for children’s bodies and may not be suitable for adults with disabilities.  We welcome the opportunity to speak with you in advance of your visit about whether our exhibits are suitable for your situation.

Strollers

Space is limited inside the museum and we suggest that you leave strollers in your car when possible.

First Aid Kit

MHDM staff is trained in first aid. Please see the front desk if you require first aid assistance.

Smoking

The entire MHDM campus is smoke/vape-free. Smoking/vaping is not permitted inside the Museum, in our parking lot or in the pavilion.
