School Field Trips
Today’s students are visual learners. Field trips give students the opportunity to learn in a real-world environment, experience things first-hand, engage their senses, and bolster their critical thinking skills. Field trips impart information that teachers can leverage as reference points when returning to the classroom. Likewise, students can make connections between classroom learning and what they encountered on field trips.
Museums are one of the primary destinations of school field trips. Museums increase student engagement, reinforce cultural growth and personal development, and promote tolerance. As students engage in sensory-based learning and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter, these excursions sharpen students’ observation and perception skills. While the majority of students benefit from field trips, studies show the biggest gainers from field trips are students from rural and high-poverty areas.
U.S. Travel Association study of adults found that “regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, 89% said educational trips had a positive, lasting impact on their education and career because enriching field trips made them more engaged, intellectually curious, and interested in and out of school.” (Source)
The Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum is a culturally enriching destination and offers the opportunities for your students in grades PreK –5th to learn in a real-world environment, experience things first-hand, engage their senses, and bolster their critical thinking skills. Bring your class to MHDM for a field trip that sparks their curiosity, ignites their imaginations and encourages discovery!
Museum visits are approximately 2.5 hours in length and on held on days when the museum is closed to the public. MHDM offers two types of field trips; Explorer and Discovery.
Explorer Field Trips are self-guided field trips and are a wonderful opportunity for children to explore the museum as well as engage with their peers. During the two-hour self-guided field trip, explore the museum at your own pace, discover favorite hands-on exhibits, and engage with museum educators at the Science Revealed Demo Cart.

Discovery Field Trips include a program led by one of our knowledgeable educators. Time is built into each visit to allow children to explore the museum. Children learn and play in the many exhibits, as well as put into practice and build social skills.

TO SCHEDULE A FIELD TRIP:
Early Bird Discount! Why wait until the spring to take a field trip? Field trips, any time of the year, are an excellent way to kick-off a new unit and get your students thinking about the exciting things you are planning for them. Visits between September and December receive a 10% discount.
Field Trips must be booked in advance. A minimum of 15 students per program group. All programs are scaffolded to meet the academic requirements of each age group. Work with our educator ensure that programs are appropriate for your group.
Adults are responsible for providing supervision of children during visits.
Space is available for students to bring and eat lunch at the museum; tables must be reserved in advance.
