Traveling science Programs

MHDM Science on the Go!

Invite the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum over to play! Our Museum educators will bring everything needed to provide a fun, educational and interactive program to your students.

COST:
  • $345.00 for the first program
  • $90.00 for each additional program on the same day
  • Long-distance travel fee of $25.00 may apply

To book a program or for more information, please contact the MHDM Education Department at (845) 471-0589, ext. 17 or by email at CJensen@mhdm.org.

PROGRAMS:

StarLab Portable Planetarium – Experience the night sky indoors with the StarLab. MHDM will bring this portable planetarium to your school or organization for an exciting tour of the constellations. Topics include: astronomy, earth science, history, and mythology.

  • Audience: All Ages – shows can be adapted to fit particular age groups
  • Capacity: Seating for up to 25 – 30 elementary students. (Speak to a MHDM educator to determine capacity.)
  • Space Requirements: The StarLab requires a 22 x 22-foot space with a ceiling height of 12 feet
  • Face masks must be worn inside the StarLab

T Minus 10, 9, 8 … – Participants will build and launch their own air rockets to help imagine the challenges and successes of engineering spacecraft and launching them into space. Who among us is the true rocket scientist and can launch their rocket the farthest? Students determine the role of gravity in launching their rockets as well as what happens when they change the trajectory.

  • Audience: Grades 3 +  / Ages 8+
  • Capacity: Up to 25 students
  • Space Requirements: A large area like a gym or cafeteria.  If the weather is nice, this may be done outside.

Mission to Space – Participants will join an imaginary scientific mission to space. Drawing inspiration from existing spacecraft, participants will design and build their own simple model spacecraft to accomplish the goals of their mission. After assembling the spacecraft, participants’ creations will have to withstand a series of tests to ensure that they’re ready for launch. Can the spacecraft hold up to the vibration of launch, or the spin of hurtling through space? If not, it’s back to the drawing board and the design/build/test cycle begins all over.

  • Audience: Grades 2nd & up /Ages 7+
  • Capacity: Up to 25 students
  • Space Requirements: A classroom size space

Engineering a Fairy Tale: You Can Huff & You Can Puff, But You Can’t Blow My House Down – Using the fairy tale classic, The Three Little Pigs, students design and construct the strongest house that will withstand the huffing & puffing of the big bad wolf.

  • Audience: Grades Kindergarten & up /Ages 7+
  • Capacity: Up to 25 students
  • Space Requirements: A classroom size space

Home “Tweet” Home – Building in the Hudson Valley has forced animals of all kinds to move out of their natural environments. It’s up to the rescue veterinarians to design and construct a home that will keep birdie safe from the human world.

  • Audience: Grades 2nd & up /Ages 7+
  • Capacity: Up to 25 students
  • Space Requirements: A classroom size space

Engineering for Earthquakes – As earthquake engineers, students use materials to construct an earthquake-safe structure and test to determine if it is a seismically sound structure that will withstand an earthquake.

  • Audience: Grades 2nd & up /Ages 7+
  • Capacity: Up to 25 students
  • Space Requirements: A classroom size space
