Outdoor Pop-Up Science Experience: The Apollo 13 Landing

Program Description:. In 2020, NASA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, which was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program and the third meant to land on the Moon. The craft was launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module failed two days into the mission.

Kathryn Johnson, an African American mathematician, who worked for NASA during the Apollo mission, was integral in helping land the Apollo 13 safely home with her mathematical calculations.  In this workshop, children will hear about her amazing story in Counting on Kathryn by Helaine Becker.

Children will then design, build and test their own Lunar Space Capsule to safely slow down as it “returns to Earth!”  Each capsule will be timed as it safely lands.  (This is one time where being the fastest is not the winner! The slower it lands the better!)

This program is for children ages 3-7 and space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Outdoor Pop-Up Art Experience: Alexander Calder Kinetic Sculpture

Program Description:. Alexander Calder, who was born into a family of artists, was a pioneer in Kinetic Art. He was most famous for his mobiles. Program Description:  What says “Hello, Summer Evening!” more than the glowing flicker of fireflies? Fireflies (sometimes called lightning bugs) are soft-winged beetles that have their own light source which allows them to illuminate against the night sky.  Their light is mostly used to find a mate or ward off predators, but their glowing light also makes them easy for humans to observe.

Outdoor Program: Summer Storytime

Program Description:  Join us as we explore and celebrate “The Astronaut Who Painted the Moon: the True Story of Alan Bean” by Dean Robins and Sean Rubin.

As a boy, Alan wanted to fly planes. As a young navy pilot, Alan wished he could paint the view from the cockpit. So he took an art class to learn patterns and forms. But no class could prepare him for the beauty of the lunar surface some 240,000 miles from Earth. In 1969, Alan became the fourth man and first artist on the moon. He took dozens of pictures, but none compared to what he saw through his artistic eyes. When he returned to Earth, he began to paint what he saw.

Our story will be followed by a hands-on activity.

This program is for children ages 3-4 and space is limited.

Cost:  MHCM Members: FREE; non-members $4 per child
