Homeschool STEAM Club: Grades K-2

Our Homeschool STEAM Club for children entering grades K-2 is all about sound, light, and waves as kids create their own musical show and musical instruments.

Throughout the five lessons, children will use project- and problem-based learning to explore cause and effect, and the concept of waves as disturbances that travel through space and substances to transfer energy. Children will draw on physical and biological science, mathematics, engineering, and English language arts to do the following:

• Explore different types of waves, including water and sound waves, that come from different sources and travel in various ways.
• Investigate how our eyes, ears, and skin respond to sound and light.
• Use technology to gather research and communicate.
• Design, test, and evaluate models to demonstrate how people experience and interact with sound and light.
• Put on a show that combines voices and flashlights with guitars and drums they’ve made themselves to demonstrate how sound waves and light can be used to communicate and entertain.

Each week children will learn something new about waves, sound or light, and come away with some sort of creation. We encourage children to attend all five sessions, if possible, as each lesson builds on the last. 

*Please bring a water bottle for your child. We will have a place they can fill it up at the museum.

Free for MHDM members, $5 for non-members with museum admission.
