Discover STEM Learning at the Science Center

River Lab

Explore interactive exhibits that bring the river’s unique ecosystem to life and discover the incredible fish, plants, and wildlife that call it home. Get an up-close look at native aquatic species in our aquarium tanks, learn how the river’s ever-changing salt front shapes habitats and ecosystems, and uncover what makes the Hudson one of the world’s most important estuaries. Ready to make a difference? Take on the role of an environmental steward with our EcoBot activity, where you can help clean up the Hudson River and learn how everyday actions can protect this vital natural resource. From freshwater to saltwater, the River Lab invites curious minds of all ages to explore, discover, and connect with the river that flows through our community.

River Lab is made possible through a grant from the NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program, and generous support from the Herbert H. Redl Family Foundation, The Malcolm Gordon Charitable Fund of the Open Space Institute, and the Hudson Valley Credit Union.

Helios the Snake

Helios, a corn snake, is our ambassador for other snakes, reptiles, and all wildlife. He’s here to teach about animals, their behaviors, and the importance of choosing your pets wisely!

Bumper the Hedgehog

Meet Bumper, our newest prickly animal ambassador! As our animal ambassador, Bumper helps teach visitors about hedgehogs, their habitats, and the important roles animals play in ecosystems. If you happen to catch him at the museum, come say hello and discover the world through his tiny but mighty lens! While Bumper loves to inspire guests, he’s a little guy with a big personality, and his appearances depend on how he’s feeling. If he’s out and about, you’ll get to see his curious nature in action, but if he’s resting, we thank you for understanding.
